Dr. Michael J. Breus: Does Your Teen Sleep Like a Zombie? There's a Reason for That

Here's a recent column from The Wall Street Journal on an often puzzling and frustrating issue for parents: teens' sleep habits. Anyone who lives in close proximity to a teenager knows what I'm talking about. We know that adolescent tendency toward night owl behavior isn't a matter of preference. There are biological changes at play during puberty that drive teens toward sleeping in and staying up later.

Studies have shown that during adolescence, circadian rhythms change. These include a shift in the timing of the release of the sleep hormone melatonin and changes in sensitivity to light at certain times of day and night. These biological adjustments to teens' circadian clocks result in significant transformation of adolescents' sleep patterns:

? Teens become more prone to daytime sleepiness and more alert at night
? Teens experience a delayed onset of sleep

These biological shifts are not confined to humans. Studies show that other mammals also experience similar changes in sleep patterns during adolescence. Research also indicates that these biological changes -- and their impact on sleep -- begin often before physical changes of puberty are apparent. As early as age 11, children's bedtimes are delayed, and total sleep amounts are reduced.

Biological changes are an important part of the teen-sleep picture, but they don't tell the whole story. Combined with these biological shifts are environmental and lifestyle factors that also can interfere with teens' sleep:

Early morning school schedules. The typical early-morning start to the school day functions in direct opposition to the circadian changes teens undergo. There have been efforts among scientists and policy makers to adjust school schedules to shift school start times to later in the morning, to bring them at least somewhat more in sync with adolescent sleep patterns. But for now, most teens (and parents) cope with school days that start at or before 8 a.m., making it difficult for many to get the recommended nine hours of sleep a night.

Academic and extracurricular workload. With adolescence comes the academic rigor of high school and the looming prospect of college for many students. Teenagers often face academic pressure and heavy homework loads during these years. Many teens keep a rigorous schedule of sports and other extracurricular activities on top of school, which often means homework doesn't get started until evening. Research shows skimping on sleep in favor of studying doesn't pay off, but it's a common practice nonetheless.

Technology -- and the light that comes with it. Teens today are digitally connected in ways that most of us could never have imagined when we were growing up. Smart phones, tablets, laptops -- teenagers are constantly engaged with personal technology and social media. These new technologies pose real hazards for sleep for teens. The teen-sleep technology problem is twofold: The mental stimulation of many of these activities can be a deterrent to sleep, and the light emitted from these devices can disrupt teens' already fluctuating circadian rhythms, making it even more difficult for them to wind down in the evening.

Given this constellation of challenges, it's little surprise that most adolescents aren't sleeping enough. One large-scale study conducted by the CDC found that nearly 70 percent of teenagers in the U.S. aren't getting sufficient nightly sleep during the week.

The consequences of sleep deprivation in adolescents are serious and wide-ranging: Low sleep in teens is associated with academic difficulties, behavioral problems, and a downright scary list of risky behaviors that reads like any parent's nightmare. Insufficient sleep in teenagers also puts them at elevated risk for very adult health problems, including obesity and cardiovascular disease.

So, we know why teens sleep differently, and what risks and hazards exist for them if they don't get enough sleep. How do we get them the sleep they need?

Set a schedule for the week. Good sleep habits don't develop by accident. Having a set routine for sleep can help teens create strong sleep habits. A good sleep routine includes a regular bedtime that's based on a realistic wake time. If your teen needs to be up at 7 a.m. during the week, then a 10 p.m. bedtime will allow them the roughly nine hours they need per night.

Be flexible, especially on the weekends. Letting your teen sleep in on the weekends is fine and a good way for them to relax and get some extra rest. Just don't overdo: Sleeping two hours beyond their weekday bedtime is okay, but sleeping until noon or later can wreak havoc with their body clock and actually make them feel more tired.

Set limits on technology. We all know how easily our electronic and digital devices can infiltrate every aspect of our lives. One place that ought to remain free of digital technology? The bedroom. This goes for all of us, but especially for teens, who are less able to self-regulate their tech habits. Set an electronic curfew for your teenager, one that allows them to wind down for an hour or so before bedtime.

Get outside and get moving. Exposure to sunlight -- especially in the morning -- will help strengthen teens' circadian rhythms, helping them to feel less tired early in the day and more ready for bed at night. Exercise, too, will help to keep their body clocks in line with their bedtimes and wake times.

Talk to your teenager. When you're setting bedtime schedules and limits, talk to your teens about why these things are important. The more they understand about their bodies' changing needs for sleep, the more they can actively participate in learning to manage their own sleep habits.

Sweet Dreams,

The Twinkie Liquidation: Can A Recipe Be Protected Under Patent ...

On Thursday a federal bankruptcy court approved a liquidation plan for Hostess brands, the maker of Twinkies, Wonder Bread and many other well know bakery products many of us grew up with as children. But, is the recipe for the famous confection protected under US patent and copyright law?
Roald Dahl?s ?Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?, the well-known dark fantasy in which five children win a visit to a whimsical candy company, is really a story illustrating the legal issue of trade secrecy which applies to the current Twinkie liquidation. As Fordam University law professor and intellectual property law expert, Jeanne C. Fromer, explains in her essay ?Trade Secrets In Willy Wonka?s Chocolate Factory?, the fictional Wonka?s obsession with secrecy when it comes to candy making isn?t far from reality.
Companies often go to extraordinary lengths to protect their recipes and closely guarded trade secrets. Manufacturers often treat their recipes more like state secrets requiring employees to enter into non-disclosure agreements, storing their recipes in safety deposit boxes or vaults and even restricting the number of executives with access to recipes or ingredient lists for well-known products.
After John S. Pemberton invented Coca-Cola in 1886, the formula was kept a close secret which was only shared with a small group and never written down. When Ernest Woodruff and a group of investors purchased the Company in 1919, to finance the purchase Woodruff arranged a loan and as collateral provided documentation of the formula after arranging for it to be reduced to writing for the first time. The secret formula was then placed in a vault in the Guaranty Bank in New York until the loan was repaid in 1925. At that point, the secret formula was returned to Atlanta and placed in the Trust Company Bank where it remained until recently. For many years, Mars Incorporated, the famous confectionary company that makes M&Ms, refused to reveal its president?s name, built its own machines and was even known to blindfold visiting repairmen. It?s equally famous competitor, Hershey refused to provide its employees with the proportions of ingredients in the company?s chocolate bars.
In theory recipes are patentable but often-times inventors choose not to seek legal protection because applying for patent approval with the US Patent and Trademark Office would require them to disclose proprietary methods and processes. ?Basic? recipes are ?fair game? because the basics aren?t likely to vary much. An idea must be novel and non-obvious to deserve legal protection ? sometimes a difficult standard to meet, because most recipes are combinations of widely available ingredients. Recipes are most likely to win patent protection only if they involve some novel manufacturing process or method. Several inventors, for example, have obtained patents for variations on the peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich by rearranging the ingredients to extend shelf life. However, how many recipes are truly original? Did pasta originate in Italy or China?
Recipes may be copyrighted, which prevents others from copying and selling the instructions on how to make a product like a Twinkie or Ho-Ho, but copyright law does not protect the food itself from commercial exploitation by copycats. In other words, while not allowed to sell copies of the current Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe which belongs to the Nestle company, we?re all free to make and even sell chocolate chip cookies although copyright protection may extend to ?substantial literary expression?a description, explanation, or illustration? that goes along with the recipe. But can recipes be considered a form of literary craftsmanship?
Food products, even the name of a recipe, may also be trademarked. Trademarks exist to identify the source of goods or services, and provide legal protection for products so long as the mark is used for commercial activity. Trademarks also include trade dress, like the shape of a bottle of maple syrup or a unique cosmetic packaging design.
An examination of the need for secrecy in this commercial sphere raises fundamental questions about the role of legal protection against the misappropriation of secrets when actual secrecy seems to be paramount and about the relationship between trade secrecy and patent and copyright law. In the end, when the rights to historic brands like Twinkies, Wonder Bread and Ho-Hos are sold at auction to the highest bidder, who will own the exclusive right to use the recipes for those products may well not be as clear as one might presume.

PFT: Polamalu to have 'significant role' this week

Washington Redskins v Dallas CowboysGetty Images

Ah, the exuberance of youth.

Redskins rookie running back Alfred Morris, entering his first professional December, said he?s not worried about the rookie wall.

?I was built for this,? Morris said, via Rich Campbell of the Washington Times. ?I was made for this. It?s just the truth. I can take a lot of beating. I don?t think I?ll ever meet the rookie wall.?

He better not, because the Redskins will need him Monday against the Giants.

Morris is 18 yards short of 1,000, and needs just 81 the rest of the way to break Reggie Brooks? franchise rookie record. For a guy who was hoping to fit in wherever this year, it?s a pretty impressive achievement.

?It would mean a lot,? Morris said. ?I didn?t think I was going to even see the field until the fifth, sixth game. For that to happen would be an honor, especially with such a storied franchise. I?d be thankful and still be humble.?

He?s made adjustments to his game, notably in terms of taking care of himself. He said he never considered getting into a cold tub until since-cut veteran Tim Hightower taught him the benefits, and he?s taken other measures to keep himself ready, such as massages.

?It?s not a pleasure massage,? Morris said. ?Those things hurt, but afterwards you feel a lot better.?

That he?s still fresh has caught the eye of coaches, who never know what to expect from first-year players this time of year.

?He?s been good all year ? I think that?s been the most impressive thing about him,? offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. ?He has never hit a rookie wall. He runs so hard, and I have never seen him wear down at all. He keeps grinding on everything.?

One day Morris will learn how hard it actually is. But for the moment, the young legs are still carrying him.

Home Truths ? Self assessment of property tax won't be ...

irishtimes.com - Posted: November 29, 2012 @ 12:48 pm

Edel Morgan

Will detective work be required to establish values?

There are no houses on the market in the housing estate where I live? . When I key in the name of? my road? on? the property price register I find that there has been one? transaction? in the past 11 months where a house sold for ?190,000 but they give no details as to whether the house has the same number of bedrooms as mine, what the condition of the house is or if it? has a? large back garden.? However two houses around the corner sold in September, one for ?230,000 and one for ?265,000. Again the register provides no detail as to the finer points of these houses. So if I have to? self-assess the value of my house for the property tax,? is it up to me to scope these houses out, quiz the owners? or the neighbours as to the number of bedrooms and compare and contrast them to my own? Well I have a life? as it happens and won?t be doing any of these things.

In theory self assessment of the property tax sounds so simple. It is speculated that the value of the home will go up in bands of ?50,000 and it will be calculated by self-assessment. Householders will pay the rate attached to the nearest ?50,000 band, so a house worth ?220,000 will pay the rate for all houses between ?200,000 and ?250,000 of ?500. The bands go up in ?50,000s . However, anyone who knows anything about property knows it won?t be that straightforward. There are all sorts of anomalies and grey areas that will make it difficult for homeowners to know how much their house is worth.

Say for example you live on a road or in a development where there haven?t been any houses sold in recent months or even years? How do you even begin to value your property?? Or you live in an area where there have been a few sporadic sales but there has been no consistency in terms of the selling prices. This could happen where there are different house types on a road or where there?s been a receiver/bank sale and a? property sold for a rock bottom price. An estate agent told me yesterday that he sold a five bed house in a well regarded development in Dublin 9 for ?170,000. Obviously the vendor wanted a quick sale because this is way below what the house is worth, even in the current market. But if , for example, this was the only recent sale in the development at the time of self assessment for the property tax, would other residents in the area be well within their rights to value their houses in the ?150,000-?200,000 price band also?

There are warnings of penalties for not paying the right amount but in this confused market, it might be hard to prove that a homeowner has under-declared . Another factor, particularly in Dublin, is that there are so few houses on the market so there will be many areas where a clear valuation is not easily deduced. There?s still? an element of trial and error with? the asking prices that estate agents affix to properties,? the property price register is still in its infancy and there has been a dearth of transactions. It has been suggested that homeowners may have to have their homes professionally valued and if that is the case,? it will be interesting to see how even a valuer would go about determining how much a property is worth in many areas where there have been no recent transactions. And if homeowners will be able to appeal if they don?t agree with the valuation or if the valuation turns out to be incorrect in the light of subsequent transactions?.whatever happens it is bound to be tricky.
