As one of American Ballet Theatre's top soloists, all-American Ballerina Sarah Lane occasionally gets the opportunity to dance in principal roles. For the first time in the last five years, Lane will once again be dancing the role of Aurora in ABT's Sleeping Beauty at the Met. With ABT's long roster of established stars and international guest artists who dance the principal roles, opportunities such as this can be much less frequent than young dancers like Lane would prefer.

Sarah Lane is married to fellow company member, Luis Rigaborda, and when they are not in New York, they frequently visit Rigaborda's native Spain. In person, Lane is disarmingly direct, humorous and without affectation. Her cheerful, engaging manner and personal accessibility is a large part of why this talented ballerina is so popular. We didn't really talk about that noisy controversy having to do with her role as Natalie Portman's dance double in the film, Black Swan. It's something that will probably follow her for the rest of her career but it isn't something that she thinks about. Lane is always looking ahead, never back. In a recent interview, she spoke of her return to the role of Aurora, her life as a dancer and expectations beyond.

So... getting any dance double work lately?
Sarah Lane: No, thank God! (laughs) That little bit of extra money was nice, of course, but other than that, well, it was a cool experience looking back on it now. The part that came after wasn't so fun. Everyone loves drama.

How does it feel to be doing Sleeping Beauty again after five years?
It's hard because my memories were of it feeling very natural because I had rehearsed it so much, at the point where I did it at the Met at least. I had rehearsed so much and it was so ingrained in me. It's one of the hardest ballets but I wasn't struggling with myself. I feel almost like I'm starting all over from the beginning and what I remember as feeling completely natural now feels unnatural. You build something and then you knock it all over and then you start from scratch -- it's sort of that feeling. I have to go into the studio with a sense of humor, sort of, and maybe be a little bit more critical of myself but not in a way that tears down my enthusiasm.

Does it feel like a lot of pressure since you only get one performance of Sleeping Beauty?

I am struggling with the fact that it feels like more pressure because I haven't done it in five years and I got some negative feedback about it in the past. I got some really amazing feedback initially and then all of a sudden I got some negative feedback that I didn't see coming. So I kind of had to deal with that and the whole underlying principle of criticism.

You mean about how people give it or how you receive it?
I can't control how people give criticism but I can control how I accept it and how much of it I accept. That was a learning experience for me. Now I think I'm in a new place and I'm doing it for myself. When I was younger I don't think things fazed me as much because I hadn't been through as much. I am stronger now and I've learned a lot over these years of having to struggle through. It's what you go through as you grow and mature as an artist. All of those things make me a better dancer to do a better job this time around. I just don't want anything to take away from my enjoyment of the role.

One of the most important things for somebody in your position, doing principal roles, is the coaching on the mime parts, the acting part... so who do you go to now that Susan Jaffe is gone?
Well, Irina Kolpakova. I've always loved Irina but she can't coach every single ballerina in the company.

How was it for you after Susan Jaffe left?
That was really hard, actually. The reason why she was so good for me and for Isabella (Boylston) was that we really bonded with her and she was there when we really needed her at a time when we really had no one else to guide us. Sometimes you don't know if the little details really matter but she was there to call them out and it taught me to see those details. She showed me how to work in a more thoughtful way and artistically, she gave me so much and she improved a lot of things that I needed more work on. I continue to try and push myself on all those things we worked on and to remember them.

Do you ever go outside the company for help?
Yes, I have in the past. I've worked with Alessandra Ferri and Amanda McKerrow. Isabelle Guerin coached me for Other Dances which I did for a freelance performance. I loved working with her. I got a lot out of it. There are male coaches, good coaches, but I think that a female coach is needed for certain roles like Sleeping Beauty.

The Rose Adagio and those balances... it's kind of a nightmare to have that be the first thing you have to do when you come on stage for Sleeping Beauty.
I'm going to do my best and that's all that I can do. I don't want to psyche myself out about those difficult moments because the thing is, I could go out there and hit all of those balances but there could be nothing else there for the audience. I would rather work on all the fine details that I can to refine the role so that, if something goes wrong here or there, there's going to be more that I give. You just can't count on those technical things. You can work really hard and be strong but if something doesn't go right there's nothing you can do about it. It doesn't change who you are as a dancer.

You'll be dancing with Daniil Simkin for this performance, how is that partnership?
He's always great to work with, actually. He has a great personality and he's very easygoing which helps me a lot. Dancing with someone who tenses up and freaks out isn't helpful to me at all because of my own personality. I'm such a perfectionist and I get nervous before I go on stage. It's nice to work with someone like him because he's very calm. He has a great sense of humor and we laugh a lot.

Who did you look up to as a dance role model when you were a kid? Anyone who inspired you to say, I want to be like her?
I didn't see a lot of performances from professional companies growing up and YouTube wasn't there yet. That probably would have helped me in my development as a dancer to be able to see professionals more often but I didn't know many dancers really. The first ballet I really saw was here at the Met when I was sixteen. It was Amanda McKerrow doing Giselle. She's always been a huge inspiration for me. I think she's a really beautiful and special artist. She has something that not everyone has. Also, of course, Susan Jaffe and Alessandra Ferri and Julie Kent. Also Paloma Herrera... her technique is flawless.

What roles do you think are within your reach now that you would like to get the chance to do?

I learned Copp?lia so I would like to have a shot at that. It's not that difficult and it's a fun role that's down my alley. Of course I would love to do Juliet. I almost got thrown into Romeo and Juliet in China because Hee Seo and Julie Kent were both injured. Hee ended up being fine but I did get to learn it and have rehearsals with James Whiteside. It would be nice to have a show and not just rehearse it. Those things I feel like I'm more than ready for.

Is it hard to be patient waiting for new roles?
As I've gotten older I've come to see things in other ways and realize that maybe I wasn't really ready for this role or that... but now I feel that if they gave me a show of Romeo and Juliet I would really take it and there are so many things that I would do differently than when I was younger which are all for the better. I try to learn while I wait.

You and your husband, Luis, spend your summers in Spain after the Met season ends. What is that like and what do you do when you're off work and let everything go?
It's really hard for me to relax at first. I go stir crazy. Even when I'm at home on the weekends I'll be thinking, I should be doing the dishes or walk the dogs or I should go get groceries, do the laundry, clean the baseboards... (laughs) I'm really anal sometimes. I like to clean and keep my apartment tidy. When I go to Spain it forces me to relax because Luis's mom is not even a typical Spanish mom, she's above and beyond that. She just does everything.

She's truly amazing and has inspired me as a wife and a mom and a woman. When I go there she won't let me lift a finger to do anything. Now I'm learning how to win the battles, slowly, you know. When I get there, I'm really able to chill and I know she likes to be able to take care of us. She loves having us there, but after a week of that I'm ready to go again. Two weeks off is too much for me. I can take one week off but the second week I have to do something like Pilates or Gyrokinesis at least. I love to wake up and get my body moving or I feel grumpy.

Are you thinking of starting a family?
It's something that's important to me. Ballet is a short life and there are certain things you have to sacrifice for it but there's a point beyond which you shouldn't sacrifice. For me, it would be a lonely life after ballet if I didn't have a family.

What is Sarah Lane all about?
I love what I do and it's really important to me. Every day, especially when I go on stage, I try to give more than just steps. When I'm performing, I try to give something of myself. Hopefully people see that and take it away with them. I want people to come to the ballet and be able to forget about their lives. I want them, for one moment, to get lost in the beauty that ballet can create.

Sarah Lane will be performing the role of Princess Aurora in American Ballet Theatre's Sleeping Beauty at the Metropolitan Opera House on July 3.

Ottawa area sports car racer Patrick Seguin needs to raise big money to compete at the highest level

Patrick Seguin

Report an error

For Patrick Seguin, there's nothing quite like being behind the wheel of a sports car, racing at speeds up to 140 m.p.h, his heart rate rising to between 150-185 beats per minute ? dealing with temperatures that are usually about 140 F inside the vehicle.

For him, it's an unbelievable feeling, his nirvana.

"Nothing else matters when I'm in the car," said Seguin. "I'm at peace with myself. It requires my 120% focus. You're one with the car. It's home."

Finding that happiness has been costly. His strong belief in himself, his conviction, saw him max out a line of credit at $40,000. He sold his condo and has already sunk more than $200,000 into his dream.

Now he has to come up with another $300,000. He knows what's at stake. He knows what he can do. Apparently, so do others. He's been recruited to drive for Karl Thomson's high-powered Compass360 Racing next season, where he'll be a co-driver with Ryan Eversley.

There have been plenty of bumps along his road, but Seguin is revved up. Racing in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, owned by NASCAR and televised on ESPN and Speed Channel, he believes, is the big opportunity he's been waiting for.

"Last year, I seemed to hit every roadblock along the way," said the 32-year-old Seguin. "Every time there was a positive, it was double that in negative. I just couldn't get any luck. It tested my will and desire. Now, I'm probably more determined than ever. With all my willpower, I can succeed."

Thomson likes what he sees.

"We've always been impressed with Patrick's drive and determination to compete at the pro level," said Thomson. "We're working with Pat and his management to put together a program for him to drive in one of our Hondas in the 2014 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, where I'm confident he'll excel and be in the championship hunt."

"In 2010, I still remember introducing myself to Karl for the first time and telling him that one day I wanted to drive for his team," said Seguin. "Now that the opportunity is here, I couldn't be more excited."

One of two Canadians competing in the World Challenge Series, Seguin was inspired to hop behind the wheel while watching a race on TV in 2006.

He had two offers to join a factory-backed team this season, but was forced to step away when a sponsorship program fell short. He knows what he's capable of doing with the right tools.

"The offer I have on the table now, it's the most sellable," said Seguin. "They're the top of the top of the top. You have to make the right moves. A good driver needs to drive for the right team."

Eight days before the first race of the season, Seguin got a call from Branden Peterson Racing. With some help from Theberge Homes and Top Karting, Seguin was able to compete, driving a five-year-old Honda Civic Si. The racing stable committed to building Seguin a 2013 Honda Civic Si in time for the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Aug. 2-4.

"Before the season started, I was having some doubts," said Seguin. "I was putting everything in perspective, but when I got in the race car, with 50 horsepower less than everybody in the field, then finished fifth, I felt at that moment given the right car I could win a championship ... no doubt in my mind."

After growing up in Rockland, then moving to Clarence Creek, Seguin now rents a room from his brother Marc-Andre in Ottawa.

He works for Auto Pro PSE as an account manager and, on weekends, helps out with a friend's interlocking brick company out of Embrun-Russell.

Seguin played junior hockey in Ottawa, Clarence Creek, Carleton Place and Perth and was going to play in Germany until he suffered a hip flexor injury. He was also an assistant golf pro at Outaoauis from 1999-2001. But racing cars is really his comfort zone, where he wants to be.

"The only thing I can control is my ability. That's why I'm confident," said Seguin. "I had all the doors open, but without financial backing, that door closes."

IAC's CityGrid, Parent Of CitySearch And Urbanspoon, Lays Off Two-Thirds Of Staff, As Local Ad Push Bites

blur streetTechCrunch has learned that CityGrid Media, the parent of local ad-based listings portals CitySearch, Urbanspoon and Insider Pages, is laying off two-thirds of its staff, or around 130 people. IAC, which owns CityGrid, confirmed the number to us and described the process as "streamlining." The layoffs are taking place amidst some other big shifts at CityGrid: Andrew Moers, president of another IAC subsidiary, Ask Partner Network, is taking over as CEO. This is, however, only a temporary move: Ron LaPierre, who has been acting CEO since April, is taking a leave of absence for family matters and is expected to return in August.

(AP) ? Thousands of opponents and supporters of Egypt's Islamist president began massing in city squares in competing rallies Sunday, gearing up for a day of massive nationwide protests that many fear could turn deadly as the opposition seeks to push out Mohammed Morsi.

Waving Egyptian flags, crowds descended on Tahrir Square in the heart of Cairo, one of multiple sites in the capital and around the country where they plan rallies. Chants of "erhal!" or "leave!," rang out in the square, birthplace of the 2011 uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

On the other side of Cairo, thousands of the Islamist leader's backers gathered not far from the presidential palace in a show of support. Some wore homemade body armor and construction hats and carried shields and clubs ? precautions, they said, against possible violence.

There is a sense among opponents and supporters of Morsi that Sunday's rally is a make-or-break day, hiking worries that the two camps will come to blows despite vows by each to remain peaceful. Already at least seven people, including an American, have been killed in clashes the past week, mainly in Nile Delta cities and the coastal city of Alexandria.

The demonstrations on Sunday, the anniversary of Morsi's inauguration as Egypt's first freely elected leader, are the culmination of growing polarization since he took office.

In one camp are the president and his Islamist allies, including the Muslim Brotherhood and more hard-line groups. They have vowed to defend Morsi, saying street demonstrations cannot be allowed to remove a freely elected leader.

The other is an array of secular and liberal Egyptians as well as moderate Muslims and Christians ? and what the opposition says is a broad sector of the general public that has turned against the Islamists. They say the Islamists have overstepped their election mandate, accusing them of trying to monopolize power and woefully mismanaging the country.

The opposition believes that with sheer numbers in the street, it can pressure Morsi to step down ? perhaps with the added weight of the powerful military if it signals the president should go.

"Today, the people will triumph over fascism," prominent pro-democracy campaigner and bestselling novelist Alaa al-Aswany wrote on his Twitter account.

Underlining the potential for deadly violence, a flurry of police reports on Sunday spoke of the seizure of firearms, explosives and even artillery shells in various locations of the country, including Alexandria and the outskirts of Cairo.

In an interview published Sunday in The Guardian, Morsi ? who has three years left in his term ? said he had no plans to meet the protesters' demand for an early presidential election.

"If we changed someone in office who (was elected) according to constitutional legitimacy ? well, there will (be) people or opponents opposing the new president too, and a week or a month later, they will ask him to step down," Morsi told the British daily.

"There is no room for any talk against this constitutional legitimacy," he said.

As the crowds swelled in Tahrir, traffic in the capital's normally clogged streets was light at midday as many residents chose to stay home for fear of violence or a wave of crime similar to the one that swept Egypt during the 18-day, anti-Mubarak uprising. Banks were closing early and most government departments were either closed for the day or were thinly staffed. Most schools and colleges are already closed for the summer holidays.

Thousands of Morsi's supporters have staged a sit-in since Friday in front of the Rabia al-Adawiya Mosque near the Ittihadiya presidential palace. In the evening, anti-Morsi crowds plan to march on the palace, and Morsi supporters have vowed to defend it if it is attacked.

The opposition protests emerge from a petition campaign by a youth activist group known as Tamarod, Arabic for "rebel." For several months, the group has been collecting signatures on a call for Morsi to step down. On Saturday the group announced it had more than 22 million signatures ? proof, it claims, that a broad sector of the public no longer wants Morsi in office.

It was not possible to verify the claim. Morsi's supporters have questioned the authenticity and validity of the signatures, but have produced no evidence of fraud.

Morsi, who has three years left in his presidential term, claims that Mubarak loyalists are behind the planned protests. His supporters say Tamarod is a cover for thugs loyal to Mubarak.

The 22 million signatures, while they have no legal weight, deal a symbolic blow to Morsi at a time when he is widely seen by Egyptians to have failed to tackle the country's most pressing problems, from surging crime rates and high unemployment to fuel shortages and power outages.

If verified, the number of people who signed the petition calling on Morsi to step down would be nearly twice the number who voted for him a year ago in a run-off that he won with around 52 percent of the vote. Tamarod organizers said they discarded about 100,000 signed forms because they were duplicates.

Adding to his troubles, eight lawmakers from the country's interim legislature announced their resignation Saturday to protest Morsi's policies. The 270-seat chamber was elected early last year by less than 10 percent of Egypt's eligible voters, and is dominated by Islamists.

A legal adviser to Morsi also announced his resignation late Saturday in protest of what he said was Morsi's insult of judges in his latest speech on Wednesday.

With a sense of doom hanging over the country, Defense Minister Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi last week gave the president and his opponents a week to reach a compromise and warned that the military would intervene to prevent the nation from entering a "dark tunnel." The weeklong ultimatum expires on Sunday.

Army troops backed by armored vehicles were deployed Sunday in some of Cairo's suburbs, with soldiers, some in combat gear, stood at traffic lights and major intersections.

Morsi had called for national reconciliation talks in a Wednesday speech but offered no specifics. Opposition leaders dismissed the call as cosmetics.

Asked by The Guardian whether he was confident that the army would not intervene if the country becomes ungovernable, Morsi replied, "Very."

The Egyptian leader, however, said he did not know in advance of el-Sissi's comments last week.

Prop 8 Supporters' Emergency Request to Halt Marriages Denied

GTY prop 8 same sex marriage jt 130630 33x16 608 Prop 8 Supporters Emergency Request to Halt Marriages DeniedSame-sex marriage supporters celebrate the US Supreme Court ruling during a community rally on June 26, 2013 in??

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy today denied an emergency application filed by Proposition 8 sponsors asking the court to halt same-sex weddings until the justices issue a final disposition on their dismissal of a case asking them to to overturn a lower-court decision striking down the California marriage law.

That decision paved the way for same-sex marriages, which had been legal in the state before the passage of Prop 8, to resume. A federal court gave the go-ahead Friday evening, and gay couples immediately began tying the knot.

Supporters of Proposition 8, which defined marriage as being between a man and a woman, had said they believed that the 9th Circuit Court acted prematurely in allowing marriages to resume before the Supreme Court had issued its final judgment, which usually comes within 25 days of a ruling.

They filed an emergency petition with the Supreme Court Saturday, asking the court to stop the 9th Circuit's "premature move" allowing same sex marriages to go forward.

READ MORE: Proposition 8: Supreme Court Ruling Explained.

Lawyers for Protectmarriage dot.com said the marriage of same-sex couples should not have been allowed to resume because the Supreme Court had yet to issue its "final disposition" in the case, which under court rules occurs within 25 days of the judgment.

The Supreme Court allows the 25 days to give the losing party time to ask for reconsideration. Such requests are, however, rarely granted.

The emergency application went to Kennedy, who has jurisdiction of the 9th Circuit. He had the authority to act on it alone, or refer the matter to the full court.

MacNN | iPhone News: iLuv preps vibration-equipped TimeShaker alarm dock

?

Supports only Lightning-equipped Apple devices

Accessory maker iLuv has announced the TimeShaker, an upcoming alarm dock for iPhones and iPods. The unit is iLuv's first alarm dock to switch to Lightning, the connector format used on the most recent generation of Apple devices. The dock's name comes from its detachable shaker unit, which can be slipped under a pillow to wake people who might otherwise miss a sound alarm.

Two separate alarms can bet set, using iPhone/iPod audio, FM radio, a buzzer, or the shaker as waking options. People with non-Apple devices can listen to them via an aux-in jack. Some other features of the dock include a LCD with a 10-level dimmer, and a dedicated TimeSync button for pulling time from an iPhone or iPod.

The TimeShaker is scheduled to ship in August. The iLuv website lists a $120 pricetag, but the company itself says that the dock will cost $100.
