Power boating leader elected head of sports body ? Artesia News

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) ? The head of the international power boating federation has been elected president of an association of sports that are recognized by the International Olympic Committee but not included in the games.

Raffaele Chiulli was elected Monday at the annual assembly of the Association of IOC Recognized International Sports Federations.

ARISF includes seven of the eight sports seeking a spot in the 2020 Olympics. Those seven, along with wrestling, are to make presentations to the IOC executive board Wednesday in St. Petersburg.

Wrestling is trying to stay in the Olympics after the IOC recommended in February the sport be dropped after 2016. ARISF sports fear wrestling?s tradition overwhelms their chances of joining the Olympics. IOC sports director Christophe Dubi told the assembly all the sports ?duly have a chance based on merit.?

Obama, NJ's Christie together again in mutual aid

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Gov. Chris Christie, the odd couple of politics, are finding common cause again.

Obama was to tour New Jersey's beach communities with Christie on Tuesday, examining the recovery from Hurricane Sandy's devastating damage last October.

The trip gives Obama a chance to showcase the widely praised Federal Emergency Management Agency at a time when attention has focused on the Internal Revenue Service and its targeting of conservative groups. The president also gets to draw attention to the kind of bipartisanship that has been harder to find in the nation's capital.

The visit occurs as Congress is away for a Memorial Day break, a weeklong recess that likely will silence the daily attention lawmakers, particularly Republicans, had been paying to the IRS political upheaval as well as the ongoing debate about the fatal attacks at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, last year and an investigation of media leaks that has stirred opposition from the media and many lawmakers.

It also comes just days after Obama started trying to change the subject in Washington with a speech defending his controversial program of strikes by unmanned drones and renewing his push to close the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

On Sunday, Obama traveled to Oklahoma to view damage from the recent tornado and console victims of the deadly storm.

For Christie, the president's appearance is yet another way to showcase his beloved Jersey Shore. The Republican governor has been touting it throughout the Memorial Day weekend as a destination point that is back in business, and he broke a Guinness world record Friday by cutting a 5.5-mile-long ceremonial ribbon that symbolically tied together some of the towns hardest-hit by Sandy. The state has a $25 million marketing campaign to highlight the shore's resurgence in time for the summer season.

Both men will reprise the remarkable bipartisan tableau they offered during Sandy's immediate aftermath, when Obama flew to New Jersey just days before the November election to witness the storm's wreckage. Politically, the visit plays well for both men. Christie, seeking re-election this year, will stand shoulder to shoulder with a president popular among Democrats in a Democratic-leaning state. And Obama, dueling with congressional Republicans on a number of fronts, gets to display common cause with a popular GOP stalwart. (Obama was not scheduled to meet with state Sen. Barbara Buono, Christie's likely Democratic opponent in the governor's race.)

Christie, in an interview with NBC on Friday, played down the politics, even when asked whether ties to Obama could hurt him among conservatives if he were to seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.

"The fact of the matter is, he's the president of the United States, and he wants to come here and see the people of New Jersey," Christie said. "I'm the governor. I'll be here to welcome him."

To be sure, New Jersey is still rebuilding. Obama is visiting those regions that have been among the first to recover ? Christie ranks the recovery of the state's famous boardwalks as an eight on a scale of 10 but concedes that in other parts of the state many homeowners are still rebuilding six months after the devastating superstorm struck. Overall, the storm caused $38 billion in damages in the state, and harmed or wrecked 360,000 homes or apartment units.

But the coastal recovery is a big potential boon for the state, where tourism is a nearly $40 billion industry.

For Obama, coming off a week that had the IRS in the crosshairs of a scandal, the trip also offers an opportunity to demonstrate the work of FEMA, whose response to disasters has been met with bipartisan praise.

Indeed, inside the White House, FEMA is perceived as an example of what's best about government. The agency, panned for its response under President George W. Bush to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, has made a turnaround under administrator Craig Fugate and has been commended for its work in disasters from the Joplin, Mo., tornado in 2011 to Sandy last year.

Relationships and love

I just got out of a relationship very recently, I felt my girlfriend belonged somewhere else and usually I put my ego in defense and try to hold on to them, but this time I opened up and let her go. I see that she will be happier on the path she goes and she doesn't have to worry about hurting me later on if we stayed together.
I feel really alone and that I still needed more time with her before I was fully ready to let go, but also I feel that I probably never would have been ready.
I'm just in a real bad place right now and its starting me to question all my relationships, every girl I dated, after me, they went on and got married and have happy families now, which I wish I had with them. I've been feeling like an emotional stepping stone that leads these people to finding them selves and their true loves and I just don't want to be that anymore, and having a hard time coming to terms or believing that that just might be my fate.

Your perspective focusing outwards at the past women you've dated and where they are now is a bit limited. I say its limited because you may not know what their marriages are built upon. Let me give an example. Imagine that you want to move into a single family home. All the houses that you can picture yourself being in are all based on what you've seen just by driving past them. You don't know what type of building materials contributed to building the house nor what materials were used for the foundation of the house. The foundation of the house is the most important in building a house since the whole entire house rest upon it. Without knowledge of the foundation you could move into an unstable house.

Look at your experiences as ways to learn more about yourself. Perhaps, the women you've dated entered and exited your life for you to learn something. Perhaps, your experiences with them were for you to look inwards to see what you're missing. Perhaps, they were in your life for you to turn inwards to improve your self-relationship and to remember to love yourself. Perhaps, you fear being alone and this fear is what makes you hold on tightly to the past women you've been in a relationship with. Perhaps, the questions are starting for you to recognize that your inner self wants to be in a loving relationship as well. When you're able to love yourself, you'll able to share your love with someone else. Maybe this alone time is for you to learn more about Kyle Pratt and to start answering your own questions.

Perhaps, this is a time for you to assess what materials you contribute to building a foundation with other women. When you assess your own foundation be honest with yourself. Let your emotions and fears surface so they can be healed with the love that has been wanting to flow throughout your being. If you have to yell...yell. If you have to cry...cry. If you have to growl...growl. Don't ignore your emotions or try to overlook them, let them surface so you can release them. If you don't release then you will continue to attract experiences that will allow your emotions to surface and release.

So I would shift your perspective inwards instead of outwards and focus on building your own foundation with the building blocks of love within. So when the time presents itself, you can contribute to building a house (building a relationship) with a women with materials of love and not fear.

96% Blancanieves

All Critics (50) | Top Critics (13) | Fresh (47) | Rotten (2)

Most films are experiences to be ignored or at best forgotten. "Blancanieves" is a little classic to be treasured.

It is a full-bodied silent film of the sort that might have been made by the greatest directors of the 1920s, if such details as the kinky sadomasochism of this film's evil stepmother could have been slipped past the censors.

Blancanieves, which won 10 Goyas (Spain's equivalent of the Oscars) and was a smash hit in its native Spain, has traces of a kinky undertone and an uncommon willingness to embrace the darkness inherent in this fairy tale.

As if bewitched, the legend of Snow White is transferred to Seville in the early twentieth century and transformed into high melodrama.

Sensuous, mischievous, hotblooded retelling of the old Teutonic fairy tale.

This gorgeous silent film is an unexpected gift from the gods of pure cinema.

A boldly conceived fairy tale from Spain

Succeeds in all its cinematic experiments

The story might be familiar, but Berger's film is so beautifully shot and so wonderfully scored - and so distinctively Spanish - that it stands as its own film.

Blancanieves holds to the structure, but not strictures, of the source fairy tale.

A new, purely silent movie from Spain that never once speaks and doesn't need to speak. What's more, it seems to get the infinite possibilities of silence, and how much passion can come from it.

Berger's film doesn't show loyalty to any traditional version of Snow White. Berger's Blancanieves takes a darker approach, which seems appropriate.

A completely enchanting fairy tale about the vicissitudes of fate, in live action and glorious black and white.

The fun in the Spanish "Blancanieves" is the way it plays with our expectations.

May not have much depth to its characters or particular surprise, but its lovely depiction of family's ability to harm and mend has the flair of flamenco and the sorrow of opera.

No, "Blancanieves" isn't subtle, but it's an unforgettable time at the movies.

Inspired filmmaking steeped in the imagery of silent film history, a dark Iberian strain of Roman Catholicism and the magic of fairy tales.

... lusty and heartfelt, fiery flamenco and spirited country jig. Don't go expecting a Disney-fied fable. Berger seasons with S&M and the kind of macabre touches you'd expect in vintage Browning or Bunuel.

If not for some faintly disturbing imagery and a pleasingly feminist heroine, you could mistake this for a movie actually made in the 1920s (and even those two factors weren't utterly unknown then).

A loving tribute to European silent films of the 1920s; a reminder that cinema need not be constrained by words.

By the time the film arrives at its grand theatrical finale, you're almost prepared for Berger's last great twist. Almost.

this beautifully shot and imaginatively told fairy tale should be seen my many, but only a few will likely get to enjoy it. This is a shame for the audience it is intended for.

This film is simply gorgeous, pure beauty on film, a vision that leaves you breathless and reeling.

France rules out Iran taking part in Syrian peace talks

By John Irish

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - France's foreign minister on Saturday ruled out Iran taking part in a proposed Syria peace conference, saying Tehran was involved in the conflict and had no desire for peace.

Laurent Fabius will host Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at a dinner on Monday to discuss how to nudge Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian opposition into the talks in Geneva.

Speaking aboard a French aircraft en route to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Fabius said there was no "magic wand" to get warring parties to the negotiating table even though it appeared Assad's government had agreed to attend.

Russia has said Iran must be included in the peace conference, which was jointly proposed by Moscow and Washington and could convene in the next few weeks.

But Fabius said Iran's presence in Syria through its officers who were "directing operations" and through its Hezbollah proxy demonstrated that it had no place at the negotiating table.

"Yes the Russians want Iran to take part in Geneva, but we're opposed because Iran is not after a political solution and on the contrary has thrown itself directly into that battle."

Iran has denied it has forces in Syria supporting Assad's army, saying the accusations were invented by the "true enemies of Syria".

Fabius also said that with complex negotiations coming up later in the year between major powers that include France, U.S. and Russia over Iran's nuclear program, allowing Iran to take part in the Syrian conference would complicate those talks.

The United States and European Union have so far shied away from directly arming the rebels, but have given them "non-lethal" support, while Arab backers like Qatar and Saudi Arabia send them weapons.

Fabius is due to meet UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan for talks on Saturday. The crisis in Syria and Iran's nuclear program will top the agenda, given Gulf Arab states' accusations about Tehran meddling in their affairs by stoking unrest.
