Jumio Expands, But Mobile Finance Offers Little Opportunity | Credit ...

00116_1080x720

Get the best money tips at Credit Visionary

Jumio has made tremendous strides with their credit card scanning software, and now more than 20 new companies will use Netswipe and Netverify for onsite credit card purchases. Jumio?s credit card scanning solution, which we detailed in July of 2011, has appealed to a mass of startups who will join the larger Travelocity and Western Union in using the software.

?The payment processing is safe and very easy to implement for any online company taking payments by credit card,? which is basically everyone nowadays, said Marc Barach, CMO at Jumio in a phone interview. GoPago, a company that has built their business based on the premise that coffee shop patrons need easier and quicker access to lattes through cell phone payments, has chosen to leverage the Netswipe technology.

If you thought GoPago was cool before this, you will never want to buy coffee with cash again. Anyone who has already decided to buy coffee before even getting into the store clearly has no time to type in any credit card information. And now they don?t even have to ? Netswipe uses the phone?s camera to scan the credit card.

While these technologies seem to go hand in hand with one another, they still only marginally approach the mobile wallet vision. E-commerce, mobile finance, mobile payments and whatever other terms you want to throw in for good measure, seem to have hit a ceiling at providing really fast and convenient coffee orders. Where is the promised grocery store revolution, with no checkout lines and payments straight from the phone? What happened to giving your cellphone to your waiter to pay for the check after dinner?

While Jumio?s efforts meld seamlessly into the current mobile finance arena, the level of play is still infantile. We have yet to see a solution that will extend credit through a mobile payments app based on spending history. The so-called ?alternative credit score,? based on on-time payments for utilities and phone bills, is still just a myth. While credit card companies have limited access to a crucial spending demographic thanks to the CARD Act, a company like Google has exactly the right platform to marry the two together.

Google does not have to become a payments company to extend credit. If it tracks the payments of its users through the phone, it should know whether they are creditworthy or not. A simple pilot program could extend credit to college students without access to credit cards and see how well they respond. Better yet, Google already has the physical card.

The mobile payments industry cannot sustainably rest on a community of coffee drinkers. The limited scope of payments and users almost harms the efforts by reporting back such narrow data. It also inadvertently leads companies like Jumio to enter and complement the trends instead of improving them. While Jumio has certainly made its mark by signing with Travelocity and speeding up and securing the checkout process, it doesn?t add up to the mobile finance space that we all dream about.

PFT: Bears beat Lions, stay alive for playoffs

Chicago Bears v Detroit LionsGetty Images

Chicago remains in contention for an NFC wild card berth, and the defending Super Bowl champion Giants have been eliminated, after the Bears beat the Lions 26-24 on Sunday in Detroit.

The Bears? victory keeps them alive heading into this afternoon?s Packers-Vikings game, which the Bears now need the Packers to win. If Green Bay wins, the Bears are the NFC?s sixth seed. If Minnesota wins, the Vikings are the NFC?s sixth seed.

Sunday?s win wasn?t easy for Chicago: Although the Bears jumped out to an early 20-3 lead, the Lions came back in it and cut the deficit to 26-24 with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. However, the Lions? offense went three-and-out when they got the ball back while down two in the fourth, then the Lions? defense failed to stop the Bears from running out the clock.

Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, who entered the game with an NFL-record 1,892 receiving yards this season, finished the game with 72 yards, meaning he fell short of 2,000 by 36. Johnson?s NFL record streak of eight consecutive 100-yard receiving games also comes to an end. Bears cornerback Charles Tillman did excellent work against Johnson in both of this season?s Bears-Lions games: Johnson averaged 53 yards in the Lions? two games against the Bears, while averaging 133 yards a game in the Lions? other 14 games.

For the Bears, today?s solid effort gives them a good chance of reaching the postseason, and also gives coach Lovie Smith a good chance of saving his job. For the Lions, a disappointing season has come to an end ? a season when Johnson was fantastic, but there was little else to celebrate.

Opposed to same-sex marriage, company ends wedding business

An Annapolis, Md., company whose old-fashioned trolleys are iconic in the city's wedding scene has abandoned the nuptial industry rather than serve same-sex couples.

The owner of Discover Annapolis Tours said he decided to walk away from $50,000 in annual revenue instead of compromising his Christian convictions when same-sex marriages become legal in Maryland in less than a week. And he has urged prospective clients to lobby state lawmakers for a religious exemption for wedding vendors.

While many wedding businesses across the country have embraced the chance to serve same-sex couples, others have struggled to balance religious beliefs against business interests.

Wedding vendors elsewhere who refused to accommodate same-sex couples have faced discrimination lawsuits ? and lost. Legal experts said Discover Annapolis Tours sidesteps legal trouble by avoiding all weddings.

?If they're providing services to the public, they can't discriminate who they provide their services to,? said Glendora Hughes, general counsel for the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights. The commission enforces public accommodation laws that prohibit businesses from discriminating on the basis of race, sexual orientation and other characteristics.

The trolley company's decision offers a snapshot of a local business navigating a new landscape in the wedding industry, and leaving it behind for a competitor to swoop in.

The head of the Maryland Wedding Professionals Association said the trolley company is the second vendor to refuse business over the state's same-sex marriage law, which voters upheld in November. The Maryland clergyman who led opposition to same-sex marriage called the trolley company's choice to abandon profits on principle ?gutsy? and predicted that more businesses would follow suit.

?That's a bold and noble statement,? said Derek McCoy, executive director of the Maryland Marriage Alliance. ?The other option would have been just to become a legal case.?

Frank Schubert, a political strategist who ran campaigns against same-sex marriage in Maryland and three other states this year, said opponents predicted collateral damage.

?This is exactly what happens,? Schubert said, adding that religious liberty is ?right in the cross hairs of this debate. The law doesn't protect people of faith. It simply doesn't.?

Schubert pointed to a handful of other examples publicized in news reports across the country of wedding vendors sued for refusing to accommodate a same-sex ceremony: a pair of Vermont innkeepers, a New Jersey church group and a New Mexico wedding photographer.

In Maryland, the gay-rights group Equality Maryland said the trolley company's decision appears to be an isolated case of a business owner exercising his rights.

?As long as he doesn't discriminate against other people, he's free to do whatever he wants to do, including withdrawing his business from the industry,? executive director Carrie Evans said.

Discover Annapolis Tours owner Matt Grubbs declined repeated requests to discuss the move, beyond acknowledging its economic impact to his business, which also operates historic tours.

Attackers Target Internet Explorer Zero-Day Flaw ? Krebs on Security

Attackers are breaking into Microsoft Windows computers using a newly discovered vulnerability in Internet Explorer, security experts warn. While the flaw appears to have been used mainly in targeted attacks so far, this vulnerability could become more widely exploited if incorporated into commercial crimeware kits sold in the underground.

IEwarningIn a blog posting Friday evening, Milpitas, Calif. based security vendor FireEye said it found that the Web site for the Council on Foreign Relations was compromised and rigged to exploit a previously undocumented flaw in IE8 to install malicious software on vulnerable PCs used to browse the site.

According to FireEye, the attack uses Adobe Flash to exploit a vulnerability in the latest (fully-patched) version of IE8. Dustin Childs, group manager for response communications at Microsoft, said the vulnerability appears to exist in previous versions of IE.

?We are actively investigating reports of a small, targeted issue affecting Internet Explorer 6-8,? Childs said in an emailed statement. ?We will take appropriate action to help keep customers protected once our analysis is complete. People using Internet Explorer 9-10 are not impacted.?

As FireEye notes, this is another example of a ?watering hole? attack, which involves the targeted compromise of legitimate websites thought to be of interest to or frequented by end users who belong to organizations that attackers wish to infiltrate. Earlier this year, I wrote about similar zero-day attacks against visitors to the Web sites of the National Democratic Institute, The Carter Center, and Radio Free Europe.

Update, Dec. 30, 9:25 a.m. ET:?Microsoft has officially acknowledged this vulnerability in an advisory, which contains some advice for IE users about how to mitigate the threat from the flaw.?As IE versions 9 and 10 are not impacted, users running Windows Vista or higher can upgrade to the latest browser version here.

Fake Views

Those who were faking the funk as far as how many YouTube views they have are in for a rude awakening, as YouTube is cracking down on the fake views that people have purchased.

?

Universal is taking the biggest hit, as the channel which features music videos from Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Justin Bieber lost more than one billion of its seven billion views.

?

Sony was also hit hard, losing more than 850 million views in one day.

?

The confiscation of the views comes after statistic analysts at SocialBlade conducted an audit of YouTube?s view counts, in an attempt to curb the black hat techniques to boost view counts.

?

Many artists and labels artificially build up view counts on YouTube videos in order to create a pseudo-buzz, using the philosophy that people will follow what?s popular.

?

In other words, when people see a high YouTube view count, they assume that the song is good and have a positive association with the song before hearing it.

?

YouTube does not permit artificial view count boosters.

?

?This was not a bug or a security breach. This was an enforcement of our viewcount policy,? YouTube said in a statement.

Now artists will have to earn their views. Maybe that artist isn?t as popular as you previously thought!

Last-minute fiscal cliff talks in Senate

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate leaders groped for a last-minute compromise Saturday to avoid middle-class tax increases and possibly prevent deep spending cuts at the dawn of the new year as President Barack Obama warned that failure could mean a "self-inflicted wound to the economy."

Obama chastised lawmakers in his weekly radio and Internet address for waiting until the last minute to try and avoid a "fiscal cliff," yet said there was still time for an agreement. "We cannot let Washington politics get in the way of America's progress," he said as the hurry-up negotiations unfolded.

Senate Republicans said they were ready to compromise. "Divided government is a good time to solve hard problems_and in the next few days, leaders in Washington have an important responsibility to work together and do just that," said Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri, delivering his party's weekly address.

Even so, there was no guarantee of success.

In a blunt challenge to Republicans, Obama said that barring a bipartisan agreement, he expected both houses to vote on his own proposal to block tax increases on all but the wealthy and simultaneously preserve expiring unemployment benefits.

Political calculations mattered as much as deep-seated differences over the issues, as divided government struggled with its first big challenge since the November elections.

Speaker John Boehner remained at arms-length, juggling a desire to avoid the fiscal cliff with his goal of winning another new term as speaker when a new Congress convenes next Thursday. Any compromise legislation is certain to include higher tax rates on the wealthy, and the House GOP rank and file rejected the idea when Boehner presented it as part of a final attempt to strike a more sweeping agreement with Obama.

Yet lawmakers have until the new Congress convenes to pass any compromise, and even the calendar mattered. Democrats said they had been told House Republicans might reject a deal until after Jan. 1, to avoid a vote to raise taxes before they had technically gone up and then vote to cut taxes after they had risen.

Nor was any taxpayer likely to feel any adverse impact if legislation is signed and passed into law in the first two or three days of 2013 instead of the final hours of 2012.

Gone was the talk of a grand bargain of spending cuts and additional tax revenue in which the two parties would agree to slash deficits by trillions of dollars over a decade.

Now negotiators had a more cramped goal of preventing additional damage to the economy in the form of higher taxes across the board ? with some families facing increases measured in the thousands of dollars ? as well as cuts aimed at the Pentagon and hundreds of domestic programs.

Republicans said they were willing to bow to Obama's call for higher taxes on the wealthy as part of a deal to prevent them from rising on those less well-off.

Democrats said Obama was sticking to his campaign call for tax increases above $250,000 in annual income, even though he said in recent negotiations he said he could accept $400,000.

There were indications from Republicans that estate taxes might hold more significance for them than the possibility of higher rates on income.

One senior Republican, Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, said late Friday he was "totally dead set" against Obama's estate tax proposal, and as if to reinforce the point, Blunt mentioned the issue before any other in his broadcast remarks. "Small businesses and farm families don't know how to deal with the unfair death tax_a tax that the president and congressional leaders have threatened to expand to include even more family farms and even more small businesses," he said.

Officials said any compromise was likely to ease the impact of the alternative minimum tax, originally designed to make sure that millionaires did not escape taxation. If left unchanged, it could hit an estimated 28 million households for the first time in 2013, with an average increase of more than $3,000.

Taxes on dividends and capital gains are also involved in the talks, as well as a series of breaks for businesses and others due to expire at the first of the year.

Obama and congressional Democrats are insisting on an extension of long-term unemployment benefits that are expiring for about 2 million jobless individuals.

Leaders in both parties also hope to prevent a 27 percent fee cut from taking effect on Jan. 1 for doctors who treat Medicare patients.

There was also discussion of a short-term extension of expiring farm programs, in part to prevent a spike in milk prices at the first of the year. It wasn't clear if that was a parallel effort to the cliff talks or had become wrapped into them.

Across-the-board spending cuts that comprise part of the cliff were a different matter.

Republicans say Boehner will insist that they will begin to take effect unless negotiators agreed to offset them with specified savings elsewhere.

That would set the stage for the next round of brinkmanship ? a struggle over Republican calls for savings from Medicare, Medicaid and other federal benefit programs.

The Treasury's ability to borrow is expected to expire in late winter or early spring, and without an increase in the $16.4 trillion limit, the government would face its first-ever default. Republicans have said they will use administration requests for an extension as leverage to win cuts in spending.

Ironically, it was just such a maneuver more than a year ago that set the stage for the current crisis talks over the fiscal cliff.

Aero Rebel to continue good run in Dine In Style At The Pavilion Marathon at Romford

Aero Rebel is making up into a formidable marathon performer. After registering a couple of great long-distance wins, the black bitch is all set to strike in Dine In Style At The Pavilion Marathon, 750 metres open race, scheduled to be held at Romford on Friday, December 28th.

Aero Rebel reached here after enjoying mixed fortune at Monmore. She performed magnificently to win a similar event on December 12th. After leaving the fifth box, she maintained the highest standards of speed and stamina. The dashing bitch always led the proceedings, taking the top prize by four and a half lengths.

P. Young?s charge was quite impressive at Wimbledon last time. The daughter of Droopys Maldini, out of Final Rose, took the honours by two and a half lengths. She established her supremacy at the sixth bend, and stayed ahead afterwards. Consequently, she captured the first rank with ease.

Among her opponents are: Avit On Bertha, Head Iton Tom, Baliff Bob, Bridge Diva, and Confey Lemon. The 750 metres race is full of big names, thus an exciting battle is on the cards. The ultimate champion will get a handsome prize of 200 pounds. The officials are due to kick off the affair at 22:40 GMT.

Back in the groove, Head Iton Tom is expected to be prominent early on. The white and fawn dog is enjoying a favourable draw. After clinching a couple of terrific wins over 575 metres, E. Gaskin?s trainee is fully pumped.

Baliff Bob lacks a look round, and this is a big concern. The brindle dog ran well in the trials at Belle Vue last week, but being equally good against this opposition is impossible.

Avit On Bertha set a new track record, when beating a star-studded line-up on December 12th. After taking a fascinating triumph, the white and black bitch lost her rhythm, and faced a shameful loss at Hove last week.

Bridge Diva is likely to be taken off her feet in the early stages. Confey Lemon appears to be punching above her weight. We wish the best of luck to all the contestants.

Britain's Pearson to invest $89.5 million in Barnes & Noble's Nook Media

(Reuters) - British education and media publisher Pearson Plc said it will buy a 5 percent stake in Barnes & Noble Inc's digital Nook and college bookstore businesses for $89.5 million.

Barnes & Noble, whose shares rose as much as 6 percent to $15.19 on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday morning, said the Nook division will not meet prior expectations for its current year.

The top U.S. bookstore chain's Nook Media unit comprises its digital businesses ? including Nook e-reader and tablets and the Nook digital bookstore ? and 674 college bookstores across America.

Barnes & Noble said in November that quarterly loss at the Nook division increased on raised spending on its e-readers and tablets to keep pace with larger rivals Amazon.com Inc and Apple Inc.

The bookseller also said on Friday that sales in the crucial holiday season will come in below expectations, based on preliminary results and current sales trends.

The 2012 holiday season may have been the worst for retailers since the 2008 financial crisis, with sales growth far below expectations, forcing many to offer massive post-Christmas discounts in hopes of shedding excess inventory.

Prime-time win for?Redskins

GriffinReuters

Well, it?s officially over.

With an eight-game gap and one week of games left, MDS and yours truly disagree on only five games.? Which means that, even if MDS sweeps, I?ll still be three games ahead.? (Math continues to be my strong suit.)

Of course, if I sweep I?ll finish with a 13-game lead.? And based on the five disagreements, I think I will.

Read on to see our picks and our takes for the final week of the regular season.? It all re-sets to 0-0 for the playoffs, at which time MDS will have a chance to exact revenge.? Or to fail again.

Last week, I was 11-5 and MDS went 10-6.? For the year, I?m now at 157-82-1, good for 65.4 percent.? MDS is 149-90-1, which keeps him at 62.0 percent.

Buccaneers at Falcons

MDS?s take: The Falcons wrapped up home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, but they say they?re playing to win in Week 17. They shouldn?t have much trouble winning against the Bucs, who have collapsed at the end of the season.

MDS?s pick: Falcons 34, Buccaneers 13.

Florio?s take:? The Bucs haven?t been the same team since they nearly beat the Falcons in Tampa.? The Falcons are still trying to prove that they?re one of the best teams in the league.

Florio?s pick:? Falcons 27, Buccaneers 17.

Jets at Bills

MDS?s take: Football fans, the Greg McElroy-Ryan Fitzpatrick quarterback matchup you?ve all been waiting for is finally here. Fitzpatrick will throw a couple of touchdown passes in what may be his final start in Buffalo.

MDS?s pick: Bills 20, Jets 10.

Florio?s take:? The Jets have folded the tents, even though the circus is still in town.? Buffalo celebrates the news of a new lease with a home win to end the season, just in time for plenty of changes.

Florio?s pick:? Bills 27, Jets 14.

Ravens at Bengals

MDS?s take: At first glance this might look like a big game, matching up two playoff teams. But with the Bengals locked into the No. 6 seed and the Ravens highly likely to end up with the No. 4 seed, neither of these teams has a lot to play for. I think the Ravens, however, will be a little more motivated to build on the momentum from last week?s win over the Giants and will take this one.

MDS?s pick: Ravens 21, Bengals 14.

Florio?s take:? This meaningless game has plenty of meaning for the Bengals, who need to convince themselves that they can beat the Ravens, in order to obtain the confidence that they can do something else they haven?t done in an even longer time ? win in the playoffs.

Florio?s pick:? Bengals 27, Ravens 20.

Bears at Lions

MDS?s take: In 2000, the Lions were 9-6 heading into Week 17 and needed only to beat the 4-11 Bears to make the playoffs. Instead, the Bears pulled the upset and Lions owner William Clay Ford cleaned house and began the disastrous Matt Millen era. This year it?s the 9-6 Bears who need to beat the 4-11 Lions to have a shot at the playoffs. I?ll take the Lions to get their revenge in an upset.

MDS?s pick: Lions 28, Bears 24.

Florio?s take:? Rodney Harrison declared while watching the Lions lose to the Falcons that Detroit?s body language suggests the Lions have quit.? The Bears haven?t.? Sometimes, it?s that easy.

Florio?s pick:? Bears 24, Lions 10.

Texans at Colts

MDS?s take: The Texans are playing for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, while the Colts are already locked into the No. 5 seed in the AFC. Houston has more to play for and is a better team and will win this one going away.

MDS?s pick: Texans 36, Colts 17.

Florio?s take:? The Texans have never won in Indianapolis.? They need it this time more than ever.? But the Colts will have coach Chuck Pagano back, and even if the Colts leave so much on the field that it will make it harder to win in the playoffs, they?ll leave it all on the field to beat the Texans.

Florio?s pick:? Colts 27, Texans 23.

Packers at Vikings

MDS?s take: This is the biggest game played in Minnesota since Brett Favre led the Vikings to a divisional playoff win over the Cowboys three years ago. Unfortunately for Vikings fans, they?re hosting a Packers team that?s peaking at the right time. I like Aaron Rodgers to lead the Packers to a high-scoring win.

MDS?s pick: Packers 35, Vikings 27.

Florio?s take:? The Vikings are playing for a postseason berth.? The Packers are playing for a bye.? The Packers remain the better team, and they have every reason to demonstrate that on Sunday.? To the delight of the Bears.

Florio?s pick:? Packers 34, Vikings 21.

Dolphins at Patriots

MDS?s take: A win probably won?t be enough to earn New England a first-round playoff bye, but the Patriots will be motivated to try ? and to wash out the bad taste of back-to-back disappointing performances, in a loss to the 49ers and a close win over the Jaguars.

MDS?s pick: Patriots 41, Dolphins 14.

Florio?s take:? The Pats still have a crack at a bye.? That?s all the incentive they need to take out the Dolphins for the second time this month.

Florio?s pick:? Patriots 34, Dolphins 17.

Panthers at Saints

MDS?s take: It?s a meaningless game for both teams, but that doesn?t make it a bad game: Both of these teams have been playing good football in recent weeks, despite falling short of the playoffs. I like the Panthers to keep their winning streak going and make a statement that they?re a team to keep an eye on in 2013.

MDS?s pick: Panthers 24, Saints 21.

Florio?s take:? New Orleans is trying to finish on a high note.? And they are succeeding.

Florio?s pick:? Saints 34, Panthers 10.

Eagles at Giants

MDS?s take: The Eagles quit on Andy Reid months ago. The Giants have looked in the last couple weeks like they quit on Tom Coughlin. Both of these teams are slouching toward the end of the season, but the Giants have more to play for.

MDS?s pick: Giants 14, Eagles 10.

Florio?s take:? The Giants are playing for pride, along with a sliver of hope that they could make it to the playoffs if enough other teams lose.? If the Giants find a way in, there?s a pretty good chance they won?t lose again.

Florio?s pick:? Giants 27, Eagles 20.

Browns at Steelers

MDS?s take: This game is meaningless, and I?m tempted to pick the Browns on the theory that the Steelers will be feeling a hangover from their disappointing Week 16 loss. But the Browns have gone in the tank over the last couple of weeks, and at this point I?m not sure I?d pick them to win on the road against anyone.

MDS?s pick: Steelers 17, Browns 9.

Florio?s take:? The Browns haven?t swept the Steelers since 1988, 11 years before the current edition of the Browns was born.? With rampant changes looming in Cleveland, the Steelers still have enough gas in the tank to avoid getting punked by the franchise they?ve owned since 1999 (even though the Browns are now technically owned by a guy who still owns a chunk of the Steelers).

Florio?s pick:? Steelers 20, Browns 10.

Jaguars at Titans

MDS?s take: Last time the Titans suffered a humiliating blowout loss and were called out by their owner, they responded by winning the next game. I think they?ll do it again.

MDS?s pick: Titans 24, Jaguars 14.

Florio?s take:? Bud Adams isn?t happy with his coaching staff.? He?ll be slightly less unhappy after Sunday, but still unhappy enough to clean house.

Florio?s pick:? Titans 27, Jaguars 16.

Chiefs at Broncos

MDS?s take: Knowing they need to win in order to earn a first-round playoff bye, the Broncos will pound the Chiefs, who have nothing to play for other than the first pick in next year?s draft ? which Kansas City will earn by losing.

MDS?s pick: Broncos 27, Chiefs 10.

Florio?s take:? With 10 straight wins each by at least seven points, the Broncos could be the best team in the playoff field.? They?re definitely good enough to continue chasing a bye week.

Florio?s pick:? Broncos 34, Chiefs 10.

Raiders at Chargers

MDS?s take: With Norv Turner virtually assured of being fired after the game, his team will send him out a winner in an AFC West contest that doesn?t really matter for much of anything.

MDS?s pick: Chargers 24, Raiders 10.

Florio?s take:? Norv Turner has one last chance to change the owner?s mind.? It won?t matter.

Florio?s pick:? Chargers 24, Raiders 10.

Cardinals at 49ers

MDS?s take: San Francisco will shake off Sunday night?s thrashing in Seattle to clinch the NFC West.

MDS?s pick: 49ers 28, Cardinals 3.

Florio?s take:? The Niners are on the brink of squandering the NFC West title that we were ready to hand them back in September.? If they can?t beat the Cardinals and Brian Hoyer at home, San Fran doesn?t even deserve to be in the playoffs.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 31, Cardinals 13.

Rams at Seahawks

MDS?s take: No one wants to play the Seahawks right now. They?re destroying everything in their paths. The Rams will be no different.

MDS?s pick: Seahawks 45, Rams 7.

Florio?s take:? The Seahawks, who lost their first round of NFC West games, have been exacting revenge in a big way.? They finish the job on Sunday.

Florio?s pick:? Seahawks 41, Rams 17.

Cowboys at Redskins

MDS?s take: In the biggest game of the day, the Cowboys will ride Tony Romo and Dez Bryant to a high-scoring win. I suspect that Robert Griffin III is hurting more than he?s letting on and won?t be able to move as effectively as he did in the Redskins? Thanksgiving win over the Cowboys. Dallas will take the NFC East crown.

MDS?s pick: Cowboys 31, Redskins 28.

Florio?s take:? For the second straight year, the NFC East title game returns to prime time in Week 17.? For the second straight year, the home team advances.? For the second straight year, the Cowboys come up short.

Florio?s pick:? Redskins 24, Cowboys 21.

Finance and the Future ? CUNY Newswire ? CUNY

December 26, 2012 | Borough of Manhattan Community College

Finance and the Future

New York City continues to remain a hub for jobs in the financial sector?and BMCC itself is located just minutes from Wall Street, which Business majors have stated is a major coupe; and a draw to the campus.

Three BMCC graduates currently working in the financial arena recently shared their job-hunting advice for 2013.

?Land of opportunity?
Elena Gonzalez grew up in Ukraine, and watched her best friend?who had a degree in Economics?struggle to find a job in the field.

Feeling uneasy about her career goals, in 2007 Gonzalez moved to New York, brushed up on her English, and enrolled at BMCC.

?For the first time, getting a college degree felt meaningful,? she recalls; having previously thought ?only luck, connections or money? dictated one?s future, ?as opposed to hard work and education.?

She took ESL and Business Law courses simultaneously, gradually learning how to grasp the specific terminology outlined in her legal course.

?It was tough, but I made through that class with an A,? she said. ?One by one, accomplishments like that one made me realize I can do anything if I work hard.?

Gonzalez was active in Phi Theta Kappa at BMCC, and went on to graduate from Baruch/CUNY before landing a financial analyst job at Morgan Stanley.

?Looking back, I recognize that BMCC offered me a land of opportunities?and it was up to me to take advantage of them,? she says.

More than numbers
According to Gonzalez, ?finance is not just about making trades on a stock exchange, job insecurity, or living in the office without knowing what home, friends and family are,? she says.? ?There are thousands of finance jobs in New York that are open for college graduates in accounting, information technology, consulting?plus, smaller firms look for finance graduates in industries such as fashion, retail, health care, real estate, sports?the list goes on and on. There?s something for everyone.?

Gonzalez encourages BMCC students to pursue a bachelor?s degree and to ?be personable.?

?Top companies are not just looking for strong performers, but someone with? interpersonal skills who have initative and can manage relationships,? she explains.

Be a ?team player?
BMCC Liberal Arts graduate Christian Narvaez stresses the importance of finding a mentor.

At BMCC, he connected with advisors Nelson Izquierdo, Pedro Perez, and the late Orville Hill, of the College Discovery program.

Narvaez credits his former advisors with keeping him focused on his coursework and grades?a focus he carried into Baruch as an economics major, and into the workforce.

?I was impressed by Christian?s ability to not only excel academically, but to also maintain part-time employment, while being active in Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society, Latino Honor Society and the Hispanic Heritage Month Planning Committee,? says Izquierdo of Narvaez. ?He has the perseverance, determination, and leadership abilities to succeed in any endeavor that he may pursue.?

After graduating from BMCC and Baruch, where he balanced financial internships with his classes, Narvaez found work as a Financial Data Analyst for Moody?s Investors Service. He often returns to BMCC to talk on alumni panels.

His advice for those seeking careers in finance?

?Be a team player. Be driven. The best job advice I received was to follow my dreams and always be happy with what I?m doing,? he says. ?If you wake up in the morning not wanting to go to work, then it?s time to make a change.?

?Proud to be at BMCC?
Roberto Jimenez commends his academic roots.

?I?m very proud that I went to BMCC; it?s where I developed my leadership skills, especially in the accounting club,? says the recent graduate who currently attends Pace University as an accounting major. ?BMCC is where I developed a business acumen, which I brought with me to internships and beyond. I won an accounting award at BMCC, which really kept me motivated.?

Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Aruba, Jimenez, who speaks English, Spanish, and Dutch, says he always had a knack for math and numbers.

Jimenez interned in the controller department at a large Wall Street firm and currently interns in the CFO office of a hedge fund.

He advises students to consider an internship?which can sometimes be counted as a ?course? for credit?if they?re interested in a financial career.

?Also, be knowledgeable about the market,? he advises. ?At least about a particular area of finance, and bring that knowledge with you to a job interview. I have a background and associate?s degree in accounting, which I can use in so many aspects of the career world. In a way, it?s not as broad as general business; it?s very specific.?

Jimenez also credits BMCC for preparing him for Pace University.

?The professors really grill you at BMCC; in the accounting department they wanted to make sure you were prepared for the real world, and your higher education,? he says, adding that BMCC?s family-feel ?is something I really miss.?

The Free Internet Survived 2012, But Will It Be That Lucky Next Year ...

The Free Internet Survived 2012, But Will It Be That Lucky Next Year?

2012 was a dangerous year for the free Internet. Lawmakers and global stakeholders all took a shot at policing and regulating the Internet over the past year to no avail. That doesn?t mean they?ve given up, and 2013 could prove disastrous if certain parties have their way.

To that end, it would be advantageous to look back on all the bills, treaties, etc that threatened the Internet in 2012. As they say, those who don?t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Internet freedom fighters will have to learn from tactics employed this year to recognize threats to a free Internet before they even emerge.

Were you concerned for the free Internet in 2012? Do you think next year will be worse or better??Let us know in the comments.

The first battle over the free Internet came in January as the much debated?SOPA and PIPA?came up for vote in Congress. The bills were designed to combat copyright infringement online, but the powers granted to the government to do so were sweeping and overly broad. SOPA in particular gave government the power to censor Web sites on the DNS level thereby removing them from general access to most users. Potential for abuse was high and many feared that the bill would be used to destroy innovation and protect legacy businesses that have yet to adapt to how the Internet does business.

Worryingly enough, it looked like both bills would actually see smooth sailing through both the Senate and the House. Then the Internet banded together and?launched a blackout campaignthat saw many popular sites like Wikipedia going dark to show people what a world with SOPA could potentially look like. The tactic worked as thousands of concerned citizens?called their representatives?telling them to vote no on SOPA and PIPA. The bills were finally?taken off the table for good?in October.

After the threat of SOPA and PIPA subsided, a new threat emerged. It had free Internet proponents even more concerned as it was as international treaty that sought to rewrite international law in favor of large corporate interests. The treaty was called the?Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA for short, and it contained a number of worrying implications. The most concerning part of the treaty was that it would require ISPs around the world to ?monitor and censor online communications.? It was not only a threat to free speech on the Internet, but a major threat to online privacy as well.

After many parts of the treaty were leaked, citizens in countries across Europe took to the streets to protest. The protests worked as many countries refused to ratify the treaty and it was finally dealt a death blow in July as the European Parliament?voted against it.?The treaty was?officially shelved,?at least in Europe, earlier in December.

All the previous treaties and bills only sought to remove copyright infringing material from the Internet. It?s bad, but it could be worse. Our friends in Washington took on that challenge when lawmakers introduced?CISPA and CSA?? two bills that aimed to tackle cybersecurity, but threatened to violate any privacy that U.S. citizens may have online. CISPA was definitely more worrisome as it?had the support of those who opposed SOPA?just a few months prior. The new bill garnered support because it made it easier for companies to share information with government bodies without having to worry about lawsuits from those whose information was shared without consent.

Like the previous bills thus far, both were killed before getting very far.?CISPA was able to pass the House, but its Senate counterpart, CSA, was killed time and time again. The latest attempt for passage happened in mid-November with the bill?being officially killed?for the last time.

The biggest threat by far, however, happened earlier in December when delegates around the world met to discuss an update to a decades old telecommunications treaty. The ITU, or International Telecommunications Union, was met with skepticism as some felt less than scrupulous members of the global community would use the meeting as an opportunity to?seize control of the Internet. They did not disappoint as China, Saudia Arabia and others?introduced a last minute change?to the treaty that would have given them more power over the Internet. The treaty was?rejected by the U.S.?and much of Europe though, and it was unceremoniously killed.

Do you think these were legitimate threats to the free Internet? Were Internet freedom proponents blowing the potential threat of these bills and treaties out of proportion?Let us know in the comments.

As the above illustrates, 2012 was one hell of a year for Internet censorship and regulations. All of it was defeated, however, and tired Internet freedom fighters can rest easy knowing that the Internet is no longer under attack, right? Wrong. 2013 is shaping up to be an even worse year for proposed Internet regulation as various treaties and bills from 2012 are sticking around into the new year while new treaties and bills will obviously be proposed in due time.

Speaking of relics from 2012, TPP is a prime example of a trade agreement that refuses to die. The?Trans-Pacific Partnership?is much like ACTA, but it seeks to establish better trade relations between the U.S. and Southeast Asia. It?s similarities to ACTA don?t end there, however, as the treaty is negotiated in complete secrecy without any input from the public or Congress. In fact, many members of Congress are lobbying to have the USTR?make negotiations more transparentsince they have the constitutional right of approving treaties.

So, where does TPP stand in 2013? It could go either way to be honest. We keep hearing tales of how the treaty is constantly on its last legs as Southeast Asian countries are?starting to realize it?s not good?for their economy, but the secrecy in which it?s being negotiated makes it hard to tell just how close it is to either death or ratification.

Another worrisome trade agreement to look out for in 2013 is CETA ? the?Canada-European Union Trade Agreement. It doesn?t directly affect the U.S., but the treaty?s passage could spell trouble for the free Internet around the world as the treaty contains much of the same language that made ACTA so horrible. If ratified, the treaty could be seen as proof that ACTA wasn?t so bad and new attempts to ratify similar treaties could take hold around the world.

The last relic left over from 2012 is?Clean IT?? an European Commission project that seeks to censor the Internet in the name of protecting citizens from terrorism. The concern is that the project does little to actually stop terrorism and does everything in its power to use the Internet to monitor citizens in everything that they do. What?s worse is that the project turns people into Internet vigilantes where they can submit content that they feel is terroristic or otherwise ?bad? to have it removed and those who fail to report any ?bad? material would be punished.

As you can see, 2013 is already looking pretty grim and these are just the leftovers from 2012. There?s bound to be more laws, treaties and projects introduced in 2013 that will make SOPA, ACTA and others look like bastions of Internet freedom in comparison.

The free Internet has been a major force of change in the world, and some clearly don?t like that whether they be a legacy business that refuses to adapt or a world power that wants to subjugate its citizens even in the digital world. Either way, the Internet has proven to be resilient to any threats against it thus far and 2013 may prove to be its biggest test yet. It will be fascinating to see how the Internet and those who use it respond.

Netflix back online after disruption | TribLIVE

Netflix Inc., the world?s biggest video-streaming service, said access to its movies and television shows was restored after a disruption caused by Amazon.com Inc.?s Web storage and computing system.

Many customers in the Americas weren?t able to access online content from approximately 3:30 p.m. EDT until late Christmas Eve, according to Joris Evers, a spokesman for Netflix. The blockage was caused by issues with Amazon Web Services, a business hosted on the Internet that?s separate from the online retail store, he said.

Subscription and on-demand services are becoming an important source of revenue for Netflix, which first offered DVD rentals via mail. Streaming services made up 70 percent of sales in the third quarter. Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings has led a push to make Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix available around the world, arguing people will pay for near-instant access to content online.

Home prices rose in October, survey shows

1 hr.

Single-family home prices rose in October for nine months in a row, reinforcing the view the domestic real estate market is improving and should bolster the economy in 2013, a closely watched survey showed on Wednesday.?

The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.7 percent in October on a seasonally adjusted basis, stronger than the 0.5 percent rise forecast by economists polled by Reuters.?

"Looking over this report, and considering other data on housing starts and sales, it is clear that the housing recovery is gathering strength," David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at Standard & Poor's, said in a statement.?

While record low mortgage rates and modest job growth should keep the housing recovery on track, analysts cautioned home prices face downward pressure from a likely pickup in the sales of foreclosed and distressed properties and reduced buying investors and speculators.?

Prices in the 20 cities rose 4.3 percent year over year, beating expectations for a rise of 4.0 percent.?

Las Vegas posted the biggest monthly rise on a seasonally adjusted basis at 2.4 percent, followed by a 1.7 percent increase in San Diego, the latest Case-Shiller data showed.?

"Higher year-over-year price gains plus strong performances in the Southwest and California, regions that suffered during the housing bust, confirm that housing is now contributing to the economy," Blitzer said.?

Housing contributed 10 percent to the overall U.S. economic growth in the third quarter, while the sector represented less than 3 percent of gross domestic product, he said.?

Last week, the government said U.S. GDP expanded at a stronger-than-expected 3.1 percent annualized pace in the third quarter.?

Excluding seasonal factors, however, home prices in 12 of the 20 cities fell in October from September as home values tend to decline in fall and winter, Blitzer said.?

Chicago experienced the largest non-seasonally adjusted decline at 1.5 percent, followed by a 1.4 percent fall in Boston.?

WWII vet's remains return 66 years after death

Perinchief Chapels

SSGT Zoltan Dobovich, an Allentown native, was one of eight men who were killed while on board a B-17G Flying Fortress back on Nov. 1, 1946.

By David Chang, NBC10

It's a journey over six decades in the making. But 66 years after his death, a World War II army staff sergeant is finally returning home.

SSGT Zoltan Dobovich, an Allentown native, was one of eight men who were killed while on board a B-17G Flying Fortress back on November 1, 1946. The heavy bomber aircraft was flying from Naples, Italy to Bovingdon, England when it crashed into the French Alps. He was 21-years-old.

After the fatal accident, several attempts were made to locate the men. While some initial remains were recovered in 1947, none of the soldiers were individually identified. The recovered remains were buried in a single grave at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Between 1972 and 1975 as well as 1979, more remains were recovered at the crash site, primarily by Italian military authorities, but were still unidentified.

Read more at NBCPhiladelphia.com

Finally, in 1983, Italian military personnel recovered more remains from the site and were able to identify Dobovich through DNA testing.

Dobovich?s remains will be flown in, with an honor escort, from an Air Force base in Hawaii to Philadelphia International Airport on Christmas Eve, according to the Burlington County Times. The remains will then be taken to Perinchief Chapels, on 838 High Street in Mount Holly, NJ. A funeral service for Dobovich will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m., at Perinchief Chapels. Interment and military honors will then take place at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in North Hanover Township, NJ.

Dobovich is survived by a niece and two nephews. The Burlington County Times reports Dobovich was a radio operator who enlisted in the Army two years after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Nintendo PSA: update the firmware for that gift Wii U

Nintendo Wii U review wrap-up

So you're the very definition of generosity and plan to put a Wii U under the tree for that special someone. Nintendo just provided a helpful tip to keep the kindness going beyond Christmas morning, if it's not too late: update that Wii U's firmware before you wrap the box. Unless the recipients are wired up with Google Fiber, they'll likely face a long wait as that 5GB patch arrives. The process will spoil the unboxing experience, to be sure -- but so does realizing that it's another two hours before anyone can use the eShop and Netflix. Trust us, they'll thank you for it later.

Russian opposition leader faces new probe

(AP) ? A prominent Russian opposition leader faces his third investigation in five months as authorities intensify pressure on the opposition.

The Investigative Committee said in a statement on Monday that they launched a new probe against Alexei Navalny, who was already charged with theft and with fraud and money laundering in two separate cases.

Investigators now say they also suspect Navalny of defrauding the Union of the Right Forces, a now defunct liberal party, of 100 million rubles ($3.2 million) in 2007.

Navalny, a charismatic 36-year-old lawyer, made his name exposing corruption in state-controlled companies. Last winter, he spearheaded a series of street rallies in Moscow that drew up to 100,000 people before March's vote that handed Putin a third presidential term.

In July, the lawyer was charged with the theft of half a million dollars from a state-owned timber company. Earlier this month, Navalny and his brother were charged with defrauding a transportation company of about $1.8 million.

The opposition leader dismissed the accusations as politically motivated, and pointed to the fact that there was no injured party in either of the cases.

Leonid Gozman, a former senior figure at the Union of the Right Forces, was quoted by the Interfax news agency, as denying reports of fraud at his party.

"This is another provocation, total nonsense," he said.

Navalny tweeted "that's enough," referring to the slew of criminal cases against him.
