The findings could explain why parents often fail to notice the sudden quiet from the playroom that usually accompanies the onset of mischief.</p> <p>Hearing plays an important role as an early warning system to rapidly direct our attention to new events. Indeed we often rely on sounds to alert us to things that are happening around us before we see them, for example somebody walking into the room while our back is turned to the door. Yet little is known about how our brains make sense of the sounds happening around us and what makes us hear certain events while completely missing others.</p> <p>Researchers at the UCL Ear Institute wanted to try and understand what makes certain sounds easily detectable while others go unnoticed. They created artificial 'soundscapes' comprised of different on-going sounds and asked listeners to detect the onset or dis<span id="vocabhighlighter1325" class="vh-Default-pen" title="appear">appear</span>ance of different sound-objects within the melee.</p> <p>Overall, the team found that listeners are remarkably tuned to detecting new sounds around them but are much less able to detect when a sound dis<span id="vocabhighlighter1326" class="vh-Default-pen" title="appears">appears</span>. In busy sound environments, the participants missed more than half of the changes occurring around them and the changes that were detected involved much longer reaction times. The effects were observed even in relatively simple soundscapes and didn't seem to be affected by volume.</p> <p>Dr Maria Chait, who led the research at the UCL Ear Institute, said: "On the one hand, we might expect to be more sensitive to the <span id="vocabhighlighter1327" class="vh-Default-pen" title="appear">appear</span>ance of new events. In terms of survival, it is clearly much more important to detect the arrival of a predator than one that has just dis<span id="vocabhighlighter1328" class="vh-Default-pen" title="appear">appear</span>ed. But this reasoning doesn't apply to other situations. Imagine walking in a forest with your friend behind you and suddenly having the sound of their footsteps dis<span id="vocabhighlighter1329" class="vh-Default-pen" title="appear">appear</span>. Our results demonstrate that there are a large number of potentially urgent events to which we are fundamentally not sensitive. We refer to this phenomenon as 'dis<span id="vocabhighlighter1330" class="vh-Default-pen" title="appear">appear</span>ance blindness'"</p> <p>The study also explored how resilient listeners are to scene interruptions. In busy scenes, such as those we often face in the world around us, important scene changes frequently coincide in time with other events. The study showed that even brief interruptions, such as a short 'beep' occurring at the same time as the change, are sufficient to make listeners fail to notice larger scene changes. It is thought that this occurs because the interruption briefly captures our attention and prevents the information about the change from reaching our consciousness.</p> <p>"Understanding what makes certain events pop out and grab attention while others pass by un-noticed is important not only for understanding how we perceive the world but also has important practical applications. I had a 1/4" aluminum baffle glued to the door skin using body panel adhesive- made a baffle, cut the same shape out of the door skin, and glued the flat aluminum one in place.<p>These guys were pretty deep speakers, no hope for the window to go all the way down. drama <i>Made in Jersey</i> had a sort of <i>Legally Blonde</i> feel to its premise, except instead of a bubbly Los Angeles blonde trying to fit in among a bunch of Harvard East Coast snobs, we get Martina Garretti, a New Jersey native working at a posh New York law firm. Beyond the fish-out-of-water gimmick, CBS' new drama seems less about focusing on the contrast between its female lead and her surroundings and more on the work the attorney does. It's for that reason that this series is worth checking out. <p>Created by Dana Calvo, <i>Made in Jersey</i> stars Janet Montgomery as Martina Garretti, a working class New Jersey born attorney who works at a top notch New York City law firm. Surrounded by Ivy League educated attorneys, including the firm founder Donovan Stark (Kyle MacLachlan), Martina's legal expertise and people skills give her an edge, though some may underestimate her due to her background </p><p>The first episode has her defending a college student suspected of the murder of a professor. Garretti does a lot of running around as she tries to figure out what really happened, and this gives us a sense of her instincts as well as her legal expertise. The arc isn't anything especially exciting, but it does add a layer of mystery to the episode and the case is wrapped up by the end of the hour. As Garretti, Montgomery is charming and believable as an educated woman with good instincts and tenacity, and her strong performance is another good thing the series has going for it. </p><p>By the title, I thought <i>Made in Jersey</i> would heavily play up the "Jersey" angle, with a focus on how different Garretti is from her colleagues (her hair, her accent, her clothes, etc), but based on the pilot, it looks like the series is aiming to strike a slightly less obvious balance between Garetti's background and the work she does at the firm. What we learn from the pilot is that she's close with her Italian family and has strong roots there, and that she's just as capable as the other attorneys she works with, despite the lack of an upperclass upbringing. And maybe her more personable nature gives her an edge when working with clients and interviewing potential witnesses. </p><p>Sure, there's one very <i>Legally Blonde</i>-ish moment at the beginning of the episode when Garretti draws attention to herself by cracking a case thanks to her vast experience with tight jeans and manicures, but beyond that, the show settles into a less gimmicky place, where the lead's Jersey background is really just a part of who she is as a character and not the primary focus of the series. If that's the direction <i>Made in Jersey</i> continues to take, I can see this one working for CBS. Also on display from <i>EW</i> is this limited edition Bat Cowl packaging which will be available at launch. While there's not a full spec list, extras will include a Batmobile-focused documentary and more than a dozen featurettes about going behind the scenes of the movie with Christopher Nolan and his team. A small African mammal with an unusual ability to regrow damaged tissues could inspire new research in regenerative medicine, a University of Florida study finds.</p> <p>For years biologists have studied salamanders for their ability to regrow lost limbs. But amphibian biology is very different than human biology, so lessons learned in laboratories from salamanders are difficult to translate into medical therapies for humans. New research in the Sept. 27 issue of the journal <em>Nature</em> describes a mammal that can regrow new body tissues following an injury. The African spiny mouse could become a new model for research in regenerative medicine.</p> <p>"The African spiny mouse appears to regenerate ear tissue in much the way that a salamander regrows a limb that has been lost to a predator," said Ashley W. Seifert, a postdoctoral researcher in UF's biology department. "Skin, hair follicles, cartilage -- it all comes back."</p> <p>That's not the case in other mammals, he said. Usually scar tissue forms to fill the gap created by a wound.</p> <p>The spiny mouse also regrows tissue on its main body when injured but not as completely as it does in its ears. "On their backs, they regrow hair follicles and skin, but the muscle beneath the skin doesn't regenerate," Seifert said.</p> <p>Seifert was studying scar-free healing in amphibians when a colleague told him that a small rodent he had observed in Africa seemed capable of autotomy, a defense mechanism whereby the animal self-amputates a body part to escape a predator.</p> <p>"Autotomy in skinks, geckos and some salamanders is well known," Seifert said. "But it is very rare in mammals, and so far we've only seen it in a few rodents that can jettison their tail."</p> <p>Seifert's colleague said that the African spiny mouse appeared to have tear-away skin that allowed it to slip a predator's grasp. The notion was interesting enough to send Seifert packing to the Mpala Research Centre near Nairobi, Kenya.</p> <p>In Nairobi, Seifert was able to document the first known case of skin autotomy in a mammal. But it was how the animals' injuries appeared to be healing that really got his attention.</p> <p>Seifert used a 4mm biopsy punch, about the size of a large BB, to puncture holes in the ears of the mice to see if the animal showed regenerative capabilities.</p> <p>"The results were astonishing," he said. In the year of 1763 there were two children born to Mazure and Fiona Vladima. Twins that were cursed by there ancestors to stalk in the night. Never to touch the rays of sunlight, to only live off the essence of human blood. To live forever upon mortals and be damned to earth for eternity.

On the eve of 1889, twins were born to Elizabeth and Richard Illess. Twins that were burdened by there parents meager amount of income. Sold as slaves at the age of five. Never separated. Together for years.

Until they were bought by the Vladima's as a gift to there children's 126th birthday. They were trained in assisting there undead masters. From giving blood, to cleaning, preparing there meals, and to sedate there... needs anyway possible. But when one of the twins falls for there master, fate will spiral downward. Blood shall be spilled. And all that will be left is a bloody rose.
