WEKIVA SPRINGS --?
A rally Saturday aims to help get the public more interested in protecting and restoring Florida's waterways.
Former Governor and U.S. Sen. Bob Graham and Seminole County Commissioner Lee Constantine are hosting "Speak Up Wekiva" Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wekiwa Springs State Park.
The festival-like event will feature food, music, artists and dozens of environmental organizations interested in trying to restore Florida's waterways and aquifer, which is the life blood of the state.
"The environment is the economy in Florida," Graham said. "That's why alot of people come here. They come here because of things like the Wekiva, like our beautiful coastline, like our magnificent climate. And if we allow those to be degraded, we're going to be giving our children and grandchildren a very different Florida than the one we have the privilege to enjoy."
The Audubon Society said Wekiwa Springs could dry up within the next 20 years because of pollution and runoff. The springs lead into Florida's aquifer. There are similar problems at springs throughout Florida.
"This is something that's very important for all Floridians," Constantine said. "This isn't an Republican or Democratic issue. You know our future, this is our heritage and out culture in Florida.? And the springs and water resources are vitally important to all of us as citizens."
Wekiwa Springs State Park is located in Apopka on Wekiwa Springs Road.
